One way Yoshinkan Aikido is different
One unique element of Yoshinkan Aikido that distinguishes it from other styles of Aikido is the kihon dosa. Kihon dosa are a set of six basic body movements which form the foundation of the basic and then the advanced techniques in this style of Aikido. These are practiced individually and also with a partner. Each movement is very strictly specified and when practicing, the aikidoka tries to do it exactly to the specification.
Why is this important?
Any martial art requires you to master many skills. One most fundamental skill is learning control over your own body’s movement and balance. The kihon dosa allow you to achieve that in aikido, with or without the presence of a partner, and also without constant presence of a teacher. Like the kata practice in Karate, once you are introduced to the movement, you can practice it on your own, and build the required muscle memory, strength, flexibility and speed at your own pace.
